Permanent Cosmetics
Getting it Right the First Time
(Las Vegas) – More than 50 percent of Mary Arnold’s clients are no
strangers to permanent cosmetics. Actually, they are coming to her
because the original work they received by others ended in disaster.
Arnold, a leading proponent of stricter regulations regarding permanent
makeup practitioners in Clark County and Nevada, has earned a reputation
at her Las Vegas business, Professional Permanent Cosmetics (sm), for being
able to correct other technician’s mistakes.
Arnold has a binder full of “Before” and “After”
shots. Some photos are of clients who have only worked with Arnold,
showing off how thin lips were transformed into plumper and darker lips,
or non-existent eyebrows changed to well-defined arches, all thanks to
the steady hands and skill she possesses.
Then, there are the other photos. Those making up
the 50 percent Arnold always refers to — the 50 percent of work done by
other, less experienced and less qualified technicians. One woman
pictured had green eyebrows. The original technician probably never
received training regarding how the different pigments react to skin
tones. Another woman had a purplish lip liner that extended way beyond
the lines of her natural lips. And then others show what happens when
people are in a rush to have a procedure done without doing proper
research, or willing to pay a few extra dollars for more professional
services and have it done right first time.
“A lot of my clients needing corrections admit
they went to the original technician because they were cheaper,” says
Arnold. “What they don’t realize is while they may pay only $200 for the
original procedure, by the time they get that corrected, they have spent
more than they would have spent getting it done by me in the first
place.”
While Arnold’s prices may be slightly higher than
those practices clustered together in strip malls, the cost is well
worth it.
“Most procedures are done on your face,” she
explains. “Why would you risk having someone without the proper
experience make a mistake with permanent ink on your face? It just
doesn’t make sense.”
Arnold, a Vegas resident for more than 30 years,
began practicing permanent cosmetics in 1992. She has more than 30 years
of nursing experience and has worked in the field of dermatology for 20
years. As an active member and former board member of the Society of
Permanent Cosmetic Professionals, a national organization, Arnold is
held to high standards regarding safety, ethics and technical ability.
She also serves on the board for My Hope Chest, a local organization
providing reconstructive breast surgery to the uninsured following
mastectomies. As a board member, Arnold volunteers her time and
permanently re-creates the areolas and nipples for recipients of the
surgeries.
